Congresswoman Barbara Lee: GOP Tax Scam Kills American Jobs and Hurts American Families
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement after House Republicans passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:
“House Republicans are trying to pull a fast one the American people. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is not tax reform, it is nothing more than a deceitful scam that raises taxes on the majority of Americans to give millionaires, billionaires and corporations a trillion dollar tax break.
“Independent economic experts have weighed in - by eliminating student loan deductions, medical expense deductions and making it easier for corporations to kill American jobs and ship them overseas, nearly 36 million middle-income households will be harmed by this bill.
“The American people deserve a tax code that will produce better jobs, better wages and ultimately a better future for their families. Sadly, Republicans have repeatedly chosen to hurt their own constituents. The Congressional Budget Office found that this sinister tax scam will could trigger a $25 billion cut to Medicare next year. This bill could also eliminate public sector jobs like firefighters. Simply put, this bill is a disgrace.
“The so-called Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a selfish attempt by the powerful and wealthy to rig the tax code even further in their favor. Democrats stand united in our opposition to this greed. I reject this un-American bill and urge Republicans in the Senate to find the courage to reject this bill.”
