Congresswoman Barbara Lee Slams Mitch McConnell, Senate GOP for Sham Impeachment Trial
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement after the Senate voted to acquit President Trump in an impeachment trial that had no witnesses or documents.
“Today is a sad day for our democracy and our rule of law. After weeks of covering up the President’s crimes and abuses of power, Senate Republicans put party loyalty over their oath of office and voted to acquit President Trump of all wrongdoing.
“Let me be clear: the Senate did not conduct a fair trial. From limiting debate to blocking any witnesses and documents, Mitch McConnell did everything in his power to hide the truth from the American people.
“Our House Managers proved their case and laid out an overwhelming, compelling, and incriminating case that Trump abused his power for his own political gain and then ordered the obstruction of Congress to cover it up. Trump’s legal team was not able to refute the facts of the case.
“How do we tell our children and grandchildren to respect the rule of law when the President is allowed to ignore it? We teach our children that their actions – including lying – have consequences, but sadly Senate Republicans just confirmed that’s not the case for the President.
“The Senate failed their duty to the Constitution and the American people, plain and simple.”
