Congresswoman Barbara Lee Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) released this statement in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance:

“On Transgender Day of Remembrance, our nation honors and mourns the countless members of the transgender community who have faced violence, discrimination, and lost their lives for living authentically. On this day and always, we must remain committed to ensuring that the transgender community is granted the dignity, safety, and respect that they deserve in the workplace and in our daily lives.

“In 2020 alone, we’ve lost 37 transgender or gender non-conforming people due to acts of violence – the majority of which were Black and Latinx transgender individuals. These individuals were friends, parents, family members, and valued community members. We must honor them by taking action to achieve justice, equality, and safety for transgender people across the country.

“As a founding member of the LGBTQ Equality Caucus, I will continue working with my colleagues in the House on policies that promote justice and safety for transgender and gender non-conforming people in our country and around the world.”
