Congresswoman Barbara Lee Votes to Strengthen Workers’ Power in the Workplace
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee voted to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, a bold proposal that strengthens workers’ power to stand together and negotiate for bigger paychecks, better benefits, and safer working conditions. The PRO Act, which is the most significant upgrade to U.S. labor law in 80 years, is a direct response to the struggle that many hardworking families are facing to keep pace with the rising costs of education, child care, housing, and other basic essentials.
“Unions are vital to the health of our economy and our communities. They help reduce economic inequality, boost pay, and increase benefits for workers.
“But anti-worker attacks by corporations have seriously weakened our unions and our middle class. Union membership is at an all-time low, and workers are scared to even organize or join a union. We must protect workers’ rights to organize and improve the quality of life for themselves and their families.
“The PRO Act is an important step to strengthen workers’ power to join a union and hold wealthy corporations accountable for violating workers’ rights. We must keep working to create an economy where everyone can succeed.”
