Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Global Women’s Rights Awards Honoree

Congresswoman Barbara Lee is a force to be reckoned with and a leading progressive voice in Congress. She is relentless in her dedication to social and economic justice, international peace, and civil and human rights.

First elected in 1998 to represent California’s then-9th Congressional District (now the 13th), the Democratic lawmaker has established a reputation for standing her ground and remains unafraid to take on tough issues and speak her mind for her constituents.

“I fight not just for a more just America, but for a safer world,” Congresswoman Lee said.

Congresswoman Lee was honored for her drive at the Global Women’s Rights Awards in April.

As a former social worker, being an advocate for people without a voice is a priority.

“Knowing that there was such a huge void and neglect in legislation about healthcare inspired me. Knowing there were kids with no resources or no way to get their needs met, how could I not do something?” She said.

In 2013, she became chair of the newly formed Whip Task Force on Poverty and Opportunity. The mission is to raise the awareness of members of Congress and the American people about the ongoing crisis of poverty and the positive human and economic impacts of reducing and eliminating poverty.

Congresswoman Lee and the other members of the task force have an initial goal of cutting poverty in half within ten years.

When not tirelessly fighting for the rights of others, she’s been known to indulge in a bit of artistic expression via makeup (who doesn’t?).

“When I was a teenager my mother wouldn’t allow it. After high school, I began experimenting with all kinds of makeup. I appreciate it because it allows a woman to express her sense of self and enhances women’s natural beauty.”

She’s clearly mastered looking great while creating change!
