Dem rep: GOP complicit in Trump’s sexism and bigotry if they don’t speak out

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) on Thursday said Republicans are giving President Trump a license to continue his “viciously sexist comments” by continuing to support him.

Trump earlier Thursday attacked the "Morning Joe" host Mika Brzezinski's appearance, calling her “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and saying that she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when he saw her late last year at his Florida resort.

“It’s up to everyone to reject this behavior. By not speaking out, my GOP colleagues are complicit in the sexism & bigotry incited by Trump,” Lee wrote in a series of tweets.

She began by asking Republicans who generally support Trump to explain to her three granddaughters “why they think these viciously sexist comments are acceptable from our President.”

She added that Trump behaves like his words do not have consequences because of the support he has among members of his party, and urged Republicans to reject his behavior.

Her response in full: "I want my GOP colleagues to explain to my 3 granddaughters why they think these viciously sexist comments are acceptable from our President. This isn’t just about Trump. We already knew he has no respect for women. It’s also about the GOP – which continues to defend & support him. President Trump acts like his words don’t have consequences. Why? Because others in his party come to his defense every single time. When leaders are bullies, it’s an implicit license to others – sexual harassers, white supremacists, islamophobes – to spread their hate. It’s up to everyone to reject this behavior. By not speaking out, my GOP colleagues are complicit in the sexism & bigotry incited by Trump."
