Washington DC - Today, Congresswoman Lee applauded the release of proposed light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).The new National Program, to take affect in model year 2012, will set a combined fleet average emissions level of 35.5 mpg by 2016.

“The Obama Administration has taken another bold step toward reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and combating global warming,” said Congresswoman Lee.

“After years of obstruction at the behest of the Bush Administration, I am pleased to see the State of California’s longstanding efforts to promote the use of more efficient vehicles on their roads through the enactment of tough fuel economy guidelines will be realized on a national basis.”

“I further urge the EPA and DOT to finalize the strongest possible rule in the coming months in order to ensure carmakers fully comply with the ambitious fuel-economy standards proposed by the Administration in order to reduce the harmful impacts of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment and set our nation on a clear path to energy independence.”

“We must ensure that the federal government’s efforts to spur the creation of a new generation of cleaner, more efficient vehicles does not also allow for the creation of innovative new loopholes that work against those goals.”
