Washington, D.C.– Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement on the 32-29, bipartisan vote in favor of marriage equality in the New York State Senate:

“I am extremely pleased to learn that the New York State Senate voted in the interest of equality for all New Yorkers.

“Denying civil rights based solely on sexual orientation is never acceptable and I am encouraged that New York State has taken this step towards ending discrimination against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.

“Although there are still many challenges facing the LGBT community, this historic vote shows the tremendous progress we are making towards true equality for all. I look forward to the day when residents of other states, including California, will be able to share these equal rights.

“As a founding member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, I have continually opposed such efforts at the federal level to limit individual liberties and enshrine inequalities in existing laws and policies.  I will continue to contribute to this fight until equal rights are enjoyed by all Americans.”
