Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) joined her colleagues in the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition to speak out against the FY 2012 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies appropriations bill, H.R. 2485,and stall its consideration on the House Floor. Congresswoman Lee released the following statement:

“H.R. 2485 destroys critical environmental standards established to protect the public’s health and is nothing more than a vehicle for bigger profits to big oil and special-interest polluters.  By attaching more than 40 extremely dangerous policy riders, the Republicans take direct aim on the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the environment we live in.

“As the proud Representative of California’s Ninth Congressional District, which has long been at the forefront of the environmental movement – working on the critical issue of climate change, fighting for renewable energy, green jobs, and environmental justice – I urged defeat of this horribly destructive bill.

“As a person of faith, I believe that there is a moral and an ethical responsibility to protect the natural resources provided by our creator.  I will continue to fight to ensure that our government takes the steps to responsibly deal with the issues that affect our environmental quality.”
