Washington, D.C – Yesterday, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) and 7 Members of Congress introduced H.R. 2757, The Iraq Withdrawal Accountability Act of 2011, to prohibit funding for any extension of the December 31, 2011 deadline to remove all U.S. troops and military contractors from Iraq. Congresswoman Lee released the following statement:

“We cannot allow or afford any extension of the December 31st deadline established by the agreement between the United States and the government of Iraq.

“Leaving troops and military contractors in Iraq beyond the end of the year deadline is not in our nation’s strategic security interests – an ongoing occupation only contributes to the hostility and destabilizing effects that U.S. military action is having in the region.

“The vast majority of the American public support the current plan to remove all US troops from Iraq by year’s end.  We need to ensure that our troops come home safely and focus on creating jobs and growing our economy.”
