Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) released this statement following the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

“Today we mourn the loss of a woman whose life has shown us what compassion and respect for all people truly means. As the founder of the Special Olympics and a staunch advocate improving the welfare of the mentally disabled, Eunice changed the perception of people with mental retardation – showing that they to could lead healthy and productive lives with the proper assistance.

“Eunice was a true American icon and she will be sorely missed. I wish to express sincere condolences to my colleagues, Senator Ted Kennedy and Congressman Patrick Kennedy and to California’s first family, First Lady Maria Shriver and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  May both the Shriver and Kennedy families find comfort in their deep and abiding faith during this time of loss.”
