Barbara Lee: Republicans Willing to Shut Down the Government in Order to Deny Women Essential Health Services

Washington, DC - Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement in reaction to Republican threats to shut down the government in order to strip funding from the federal budget that would provide women with essential health services:
“I oppose a shut down because it would jeopardize our economy, deny vital services to Americans, and leave millions of people without paychecks – and all because Republicans want to deny women their basic rights and health services like breast exams, prenatal services and birth control.
“This is a dangerous escalation, and a new low, in the Republican war on women. We know that our most vulnerable populations will bear the consequences of this extreme Republican ideological war on women. Poor women, low income women and women of color are those who will be denied their cancer screenings or prenatal care.
“Enough is enough. If Republicans do succeed in shutting down the government, it should be crystal clear why, and we must mobilize like never before to hold them accountable.”
