Barbara Lee Responds to Reports of New NSA Domestic Spying

(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) released the following statement in response to news reports today that the Bush administration authorized another secret NSA program to monitor the telephone calls of Americans:

“I am deeply concerned by new evidence that the Bush administration is conducting warrantless surveillance of Americans, and I fear that, left unchallenged, President Bush's actions will do lasting damage to the Constitution and the principles upon which this nation was founded.

“It is very simple: we can defend our country without trashing the Constitution. The President is not above the law.

“The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Day after day, we hear the president talk about spreading rights and freedom in places like Iraq, when he is trampling on the rights and freedoms of Americans.”
