(Washington, DC) – Saddened by the sudden passing of close friend and colleague, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-9) issued the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and colleague, Chairman Tom Lantos, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Annette, his family, friends, and to his constituents.

“I have had the privilege to work on the Foreign Affairs Committee with Chairman Lantos for eight years, and I have worked very closely with him in the legislative process addressing the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, orphans, and vulnerable children, and the genocide in Darfur, in addition to many other issues that we both cared very passionately about.

“Tom was a master in navigating the legislative process, and I benefited greatly from his tremendous wisdom, insight and experience.

“Chairman Lantos was a great human being and, as a survivor of the Holocaust, he condemned genocide wherever it occurred. In doing so, I will remember him as a staunch advocate for human rights throughout the world.

“I will deeply miss Tom, but I know that his legacy will inspire Members of Congress to work more closely together in a bipartisan fashion to put forth solutions to the critical issues of our time.”
