Washington, D.C.  – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) issued the following statement today to commemorate Caribbean-American Heritage Month:

“Caribbean American Heritage Month reminds us of the large and diverse constituencies of Caribbean Americans in our nation, and provides us with an opportunity to send a message of good will to the community at home and abroad. In addition to this celebratory occasion, one is reminded of the challenges we must also face alongside our Caribbean neighbors. From trade, energy, and immigration to disaster preparedness, HIV/AIDS, critical challenges are present that we must solve together.

“It took many years for the United States Government to officially recognize June as Caribbean American Heritage. After working with the Caribbean American community to push for bipartisan support for such a bill, I was pleased to finally see my legislation become law in February 2006 when House Concurrent Resolution 71 passed Congress unanimously. Since then, both President Bush and President Obama have issued a proclamation annually recognizing June as Caribbean-American Heritage Month.

“As a long-time supporter of the Caribbean and frequent visitor of the region, I am proud to be the main sponsor of H. Res. 289, acknowledging the important contributions Caribbean-Americans have made to our nation’s history and culture. In supporting this measure we honor not only the Caribbean American Community but the rich gifts they continue to provide this country. Let us continue to celebrate the rich diversity of this nation of immigrants and recognize that it will forever be the great blessing and strength of our community.”
