Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) released this statement following President Barack Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress.

“It was important for Congress and the American people to hear directly from President Obama - his plan for reforming America’s broken healthcare system. We’ve heard him, but there is still much work to do.

“I thought the President was frank, clear and made his case for the vital need for real reform. He also did a great job in dispelling the lies and myths being spread by those special interests and opponents of any change to the status quo.

“He sent a clear message that reform can only be achieved through choice and competition. That means a robust public option - and I'm glad the president supports it and that he recognized that it is supported by the majority of Americans who want that choice and competition.

“We cannot back away from the type of choice and competition that will lower costs and provide options people need and deserve. I along with my colleagues will keep fighting for a strong robust public option because we agree with the president that real reform is needed.”
