Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-9) applauded the Obama Administration’s proposal for new fuel economy standards and the first ever greenhouse gas pollution standards for cars. The program will begin in model year 2012. By 2016 the fleet average will be 35.5 miles per gallon, which is four years earlier than the existing CAFE law requires.
“The State of California has been fighting diligently for a waiver from federal law so that we could set our own fuel economy guidelines,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “I am pleased to see the Obama Administration embracing these standards and looking to implement them on a national basis.
“This bold move by the Obama Administration to end our dependence on foreign oil and reduce greenhouse gas emissions is a clear change in course from the Bush Administration’s decision last year to block California’s efforts to combat global warming and promote the use of cleaner, more efficient vehicles on their roads.
“The danger global warming poses on the future of our environment is real. Today’s announcement put our country on a clear path to a greener and more energy secure future.”
