Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-D) joined her colleagues in welcoming Mexican President Felipe Calderón during a ceremony at the White House yesterday. Today, she attended a joint session of Congress, where President Calderón addressed both the House and Senate. She released this statement:

“I join President Obama and my colleagues in Congress in welcoming President Calderón to the United States. The United States - and my state of California in particular - have a long history with Mexico.

“We have a unique relationship considering our shared geography, peoples, and economic interests. Our future prosperity is bound together.

“I was pleased that during his address to Congress President Calderón expressed his objection to the recently adopted Arizona immigration law. Additionally, I applauded his call for the United States to stop the flow of assault weapons and other arms across the border and to reinstate the ban on many assault weapons ban that was enacted in 1994 but allowed to expire during the George W. Bush presidency.

“As we move forward, it is imperative that we continue to strengthen our relationship with our neighbor to the south. I look forward to working with President Calderón and the people of Mexico as we work to confront our common challenges and to build greater partnerships that will benefit both our countries.”
