OAKLAND – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) announced that the Peralta Community College District has been selected to receive $2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). The funding is being made available through DOE’s Strengthening Institution Grant Program and will be used to develop basic skills classes in math and writing and to implement an assessment-tracking system at Berkeley City College.

Berkeley City College will receive $400,000 in grant funding annually for the next five years to develop model cross-disciplinary curricula to improve and track student success in basic skills and to ease their transition to four-year universities and job-training classes.

“I am pleased that the Peralta Community College District and Berkeley City College will receive this important funding; it comes at a time when community colleges face significant budget cuts because of California’s financial crisis,” Congresswoman Lee said. “The grant will allow Berkeley City College to develop basic skills classes and testing-assessment tracking to provide a safety net for students who need additional assistance when they enroll into the junior college.”
