Cannabis Caucus Co-Chairs Barbara Lee and Earl Blumenauer Applaud the Introduction of Landmark Cannabis Reform Legislation
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) and Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), co-chairs of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, today issued the following statements after the introduction of comprehensive cannabis reform legislation, the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act, by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler:
“For far too long, our federal cannabis policies have been rooted in the past. As states continue to modernize how we regulate cannabis, Congress has a responsibility to ensure that our policies are fair, equitable, and inclusive,” said Congresswoman Lee. “As Co-Chair of the bipartisan Cannabis Caucus, I am pleased to have worked with Chairman Nadler to ensure the inclusion of language from my legislation to legalize marijuana at the federal level, address the disproportionate impact of prohibition on communities of color by expunging criminal convictions, and promote equitable participation in the legal marijuana industry by investing in the communities hardest hit by the failed War on Drugs. I applaud Chairman Nadler for his leadership on this legislation.”
“Chairman Nadler and I have been working on this issue for decades,” said Congressman Blumenauer. “I applaud the Chairman for introducing this comprehensive legislation to end the federal prohibition of cannabis and address the injustice brought on by the war on drugs. This is our blueprint in action and a monumental step forward. With the continued leadership of the Cannabis Caucus, Congresswoman Lee, and Chairman Nadler, we will get this right and end the failed prohibition of cannabis.”
