Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) announced today that Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland has been selected to receive $3.84 million in funding through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Affordable Care Act.

The funding – made possible through the Primary Care Residency Expansion Grant – will be used over the next five years to expand the pediatric residency program at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. This funding is part of 82 awards totaling $320 million nationwide that were announced today by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Children’s Hospital received the largest award in the state and the sixth largest in the country.

“I am pleased that Children’s Hospital will receive this much-needed funding to enhance pediatric care,” Congresswoman Lee said. “With this funding, Children’s Hospital will ultimately be able to add physicians who will continue its longstanding legacy of providing quality care for its patients.”

Congresswoman Lee is also pleased to announce that the Oakland-based Asian Community Mental Health Services will receive a $500,000 grant to support its Behavioral Health Smoking Cessation Program. The grant is funded through the Affordable Care Act’s Prevention and Public Health Fund, which seeks to improve health by improving the coordination of healthcare services delivered in publicly-funded community mental health and other community-based health settings.
