Congressional Pro-Choice Leaders Blast White House over Dangerous and Discriminatory Rule Gutting Affordable Care Act Protections

Washington, D.C. – In response to the Trump Administration’s proposed rule that would gut Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which protects individuals from discrimination in health care on the basis of race, color, national origin and sex, including gender identity, pregnancy, age or disability, Representatives Barbara Lee (CA-13) and Diana DeGette (CO-01), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus issued the following statement:

“The Trump Administration’s proposed rule is yet another dangerous and discriminatory attack on patients’ constitutionally-protected right to abortion access and the full range of reproductive health care.

“Section 1557 of the ACA has been a critical component of ensuring health equity for women, LGBTQ patients, and communities of color. It increased critical accessibility of health coverage and care, including comprehensive, reproductive health care. This proposed rule would gut those protections and open the door for providers to refuse to treat someone because they have had an abortion, or deny an individual counseling on the full range of birth control options.

“Discrimination has no place in health care. Rolling back this law would put individuals’ lives and health in danger.”
