Congresswoman Barbara Lee Announces Appropriations Projects for the Port of Oakland

Port to Receive $32 Million

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) today applauded news that the FY 04 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill includes $32 million for the Port of Oakland projects. The conference report was passed by the House today and now goes to the Senate for final approval.

The Port is scheduled to receive $20 million in funding for the Port of Oakland’s ongoing 50-foot dredging project and $9 million for the Port’s channel maintenance dredging. The Port’s dredging projects are the underpinning for the largest maritime expansion in the history of the Port of Oakland. That development is expected to create 8,000 jobs and generate millions of dollars in business, personal, local, and state revenue.

Also included in the bill is $3 million for the preparation of Hamilton Army Airfield to receive dredged material from multiple Bay Area dredging projects.

President Bush’s FY 04 budget request was only $7 million for the dredging project; $6.875 million for the maintenance dredging; and $2 million for the Hamilton Army Airfield project.

“These figures represent a huge victory for the 9th Congressional District,” said Lee. “These monies will help bring jobs to our District and will ensure that the Port of Oakland continues to be one of the leading centers of commerce on the West Coast.”

"This is excellent news,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Tay Yoshitani. “The $20 million appropriated for deepening the harbor will keep us on schedule as we move forward with our 50-foot dredging project. Funding for this project is essential for the Port of Oakland to handle future growth in international trade and contribute to the stability of our regional economy. Congresswoman Barbara Lee and the Bay Area congressional delegation should be congratulated for their leadership and tireless efforts to bring this critical federal funding to Oakland.”
