Congresswoman Barbara Lee Announces Joint Congressional Black Caucus-Senate Democrats African American Leadership Summit

Several Oakland residents scheduled to participate in forum

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Barbara Lee (D-CA) today announced plans for an African American Leadership Summit with Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members, Senate Democrats and over 250 African American leaders from around the country. The summit will take place on Thursday, June 26 and will include a daylong discussion on issues important to African American families, including jobs and the economy, education, health care, civil rights and homeland security.

The Summit is an unprecedented joint effort by the CBC and the Senate Democrats to bring African American leaders to the Capitol to discuss contemporary policy issues. It represents a continuation of work started in previous meetings between the two legislative partners.

The Summit will open with roundtable discussions with Senate and House Democrats and African American leaders, followed by a panel discussion on jobs and the economy moderated by former Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman. The Summit will conclude later that afternoon with a town hall meeting with young African American leaders. The discussion will focus on policy priorities raised by these emerging civic leaders, and it will emphasize greater participation of younger African Americans in the electoral process.

Two East Bay residents will participate: Dr. Ruth B. Love, Professor of Education Administration at San Francisco State University and President of RVL Enterprises and Carol H. Williams, President, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of Carol H.Williams Advertising.

“The 2003 African American Leadership Summit represents an effort to reach out to form ties with our Senate colleagues,” said Lee. “Meeting with the Senate Democrats will offer us an opportunity to again tell them just what we have been fighting for and just what we stand for. I am excited that people from the 9th District will be participating in this summit.”
