Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) today announced that the annual Artistic Discovery awards reception will be held at the newly-refurbished Oakland Museum of California, located at 1000 Oak Street, in Oakland, CA.

The awards reception will take place Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oakland Museum of California. Art work submitted from throughout the Ninth Congressional District will be showcased and be on display for public viewing on the day of the reception. Congresswoman Lee will be there to present the first-, second- and third-place winners with their prizes.

High school students who reside in the Ninth Congressional District are eligible to compete in the 2010 Artistic Discovery competition, which is part of an annual high school congressional arts competition. Those interested in submitting work for this year’s competition should contact Elaine McKellar in Congresswoman Lee’s district office at 510-762-0370. For those interested in attending the reception, you can RSVP at ArtisticDiscovery2010@mail.house.gov.

Artistic Discovery is part of the annual nationwide Congressional Art Competition that is intended to showcase the talents and abilities of high school students from throughout the country. The winning artwork from each Congressional District is displayed in the corridor that connects the Cannon House Office Building with the U.S. Capitol for a year. The first-place winner will also be flown to the nation’s capital to attend an awards ceremony on June 17, 2010.

This year’s competition is being held at the Oakland Museum of California to celebrate its grand re-opening. The museum has been closed for two years while undergoing a $62 million transformation to better present its collections and programs to the public. The museum officially reopens on Saturday, May 1, 2010.
