Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration will award a $700,000 grant to the East Bay Conversion and Reinvestment Commission (EBCRC) at a special ceremony to be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2003. Matthew Crow, EDA Director of Communications will be present to deliver the check to David Wilson, EBCRC Executive Director.

The EBCRC was established in 1993 to identify and create innovative approaches to improve the defense conversion process, as several East Bay military bases were being decommissioned in the early 1990s. Through its “Defense Conversion Revolving Loan Fund,” the EBCRC has helped finance more than $1.4 million to qualified small, minority, and disadvantaged businesses. With this new grant from EDA, EBCRC’s funding capabilities will increase to $2 million, which will be leveraged with other resources to create a $15 million loan pool.

“This new round of funding will give even more local businesses a chance to grow, develop, and thrive, and will help to establish jobs for community residents,” said Congresswoman Lee. “I am pleased that the EDA has recognized the EBCRC’s outstanding record of achievement and success in creating and fostering economic development opportunities in and around my Congressional district.”
