Congresswoman Barbara Lee Applauds Funding for Port Of Oakland and Other 9th Congressional District Projects

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Barbara Lee today applauded news that the FY 03 omnibus budget passed tonight by the House of Representatives includes more than $12 million in funding for the 50-foot dredging project for the Port of Oakland and $11.2 million for the Port’s channel maintenance dredging. The bill now goes to the Senate.

The Port of Oakland dredging projects are the underpinning of the largest maritime expansion in the history of the Port of Oakland. The project is expected to create 8,000 jobs and generate millions of dollars in business, personal, state, and local revenue.

"Our region depends on our port facilities," said Lee. "Now, these dredging projects will ensure the success of the Port of Oakland."

Lee also secured $500,000 for extended-day kindergarten programs for the Oakland Unified School System, $900,000 for educational curricula at the Chabot Science Center; and $500,000 for Chabot’s teacher-training programs.

"I hope that this small amount will enhance the education of our children in the Oakland public schools," said Lee.

Other highlights included $400,000 for Project AVARY (Alternative Ventures for At-Risk Youth); $1.05 million for bus and bus facilities for AC Transit; $250,000 for a Fruitvale Transit Village parking structure; $225,000 for a community center at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center; and $135,000 for the renovation of the Casa de Las Flores Senior Housing facility.
