Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) released this statement commemorating Women’s Equality Day:
“It has been 90 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment and women achieving the right to vote here in the United States. The many contributions of women both at the ballot box and in public office have helped to shape this country and have brought us to this place in history.
“As we reflect on this Women’s Equality Day, let us continue to use the power of our vote to create a fair and just society for all people as a tribute to the many women sojourners both known and unknown who fought so that we might enjoy this privilege.
“Also, let us recommit ourselves to women’s global struggle for equality and human rights and work to cultivate and empower our young women into the next generation of leaders.”
Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26, 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed designating August 26 of each year as Women's Equality Day.
