Congresswoman Barbara Lee Earns 100% Grade from National Parks Conservation Association; Receives "Friend of the National Parks" Award

Washington, DC - Today, in a ceremony at the Capitol, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-California) received the "Friend of the National Parks" award from the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). The "Friend of the National Parks" award is based solely on a member’s 107th Congress voting record on legislation that upholds the standards and integrity of the National Park System.

Lee received a perfect score on her environmental record from the NPCA. Lee was one of only 46 Congress members who scored a perfect score, and she was one of only six California members who earned the 100% rating.

"I am honored to receive this award from the National Parks Conservation Association," said Lee.

One House vote used for the NPCA’s grade involved prohibiting federal funds for conducting mineral leasing activities within the boundaries of a national monument. Another vote used by the NPCA involved the prohibition of Interior Appropriations funding for new drilling activity on federal oil leases adjacent to the Channel Islands National Park. The Channel Islands National Park is host to 145 terrestrial plants and animals that can be found nowhere else in the world.

"The preservation of the environment through the protection of our National Park System is one of the most important things that we can do as legislators," said Lee. "Now more than ever, in the face of the Bush Administration’s assault on our environmental laws and regulations, it is of the utmost importance that we save our parks, our wildlife, and our planet."
