Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) joined the majority of her colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives in voting in support of the DREAM Act – bipartisan legislation that gives students who already reside in the United States and have grown up in the United States a chance to contribute to our country’s well-being by pursuing a higher education or serving in the Armed Forces.

Congresswoman Lee released this statement following the passage of the Dream Act in the House by a vote of 216 to 198:
“This historic legislation immediately improves the lives of an estimated 800,000 young people looking to build a more promising and productive future for themselves. The DREAM Act is vital to the future of our country and it is the right thing to do for these young people. The DREAM Act does not reward illegality. It provides the opportunity to achieve the American dream for a select and deserving group of students.

“Should we further punish these 800,000 young people through deportation and keep them in legal limbo, or should we allow these highly motivated youth to attend colleges and become productive members of our society? The answer really should be quite obvious.

“The DREAM Act is long overdue. I supported the DREAM Act because it is in our national interest and it reflects the best of our American values. It is necessary for us to be able to ensure that these young people who have been trained and educated in the United States remain in this country and become our own leaders of tomorrow.”
