Washington, DC – The bipartisan First Focus Campaign for Children announced today that it will recognize Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) as a 2012 Champion for children, based on her legislative agenda that prioritizes the needs of children and youth locally, nationally and globally.

“I am truly honored to receive this recognition,” Congresswoman Lee said. “The work that is being done by First Focus Campaign for Children gives me constant encouragement in my own work to improve the health and well being, educational opportunities and overall quality of life for the children of Oakland and our nation.”

“Lots of politicians talk about kids’ issues, but few back it up,” said Bruce Lesley, president of the Campaign for Children. “Representative Lee delivered for kids.”

For the third year, First Focus has selected a group of 50 members of the House and Senate who have made “extraordinary efforts” to introduce, co-sponsor and vote for legislation that would improve the quality of life and well-being of our nation’s children.    As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and as Co-Chair of the Out-of-Poverty Caucus,  Representative Lee has long focused on the educational and health and nutritional needs of children, especially those living in poverty.
