Congresswoman Barbara Lee is Sworn In as Congressional Black Caucus Whip

Washington, DC -- Congresswoman Barbara Lee this morning was sworn in as Whip for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) for the 108th Congress. The CBC held its ceremony at the Washington Hyatt Regency hours before all members of the 108th Congress were sworn in. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was on hand to swear in new members.

"It is a real honor to be chosen as Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus," said Lee. "I look forward to extending the achievements of the CBC leaders of the 107th Congress."

"The goals of the CBC are always important. We ensure that the voices of African-Americans and all people of color are heard," said Lee. "But in light of the recent controversy with Senator Trent Lott, it is more important than ever that we fight to guarantee that the needs of African-Americans and all people of color are front and center in the legislative agenda of the 108th Congress."

Before being elected CBC Whip, Congresswoman Lee had previously served two terms as a Democratic Regional Whip. Lee also was Vice-Chair of the Progressive Caucus during the 107th Congress.
