Congresswoman Barbara Lee Marks Labor Day
Calls for Greater Investments in Working Families, Slams Massive Tax Breaks to Corporate Interests
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement in observance of Labor Day:
“American families are working harder than ever to put food on the table, pay the rent, afford child care and save for a secure retirement. But despite unprecedented productivity and record profits for big corporations, wages for middle and low-income workers, especially communities of color, have stagnated and, in some cases, even declined. Simply put, the middle class is being hollowed out by the greed and profits of those at the very top.
“Rather than addressing this crisis of income inequality and poverty, the Trump Administration is doing everything possible to stack the deck against the poor and middle class. Through the tax scam pushed through by Republicans last year, billionaires and corporations will receive a record $1.5 trillion in tax breaks. But the promised raises for workers never materialized. Even worse, Republicans are now trying to loot Medicare, Medicaid and food assistance to pay for these massive handouts to donors and special interests.
“Labor Day is a time to celebrate the power of organized labor and the progress unionized workers have made for fair wages, safe working conditions and civil rights protections. It’s also an opportunity to look forward – to change the rigged system so working families, not corporate profits, come first. I stand with our union brothers and sisters as we fight for the right to organize, a living wage, and economic opportunity for all families.”
