Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) today issued the following statement upon learning of the passing of prominent Oakland columnist Peggy Stinnett:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend Peggy Stinnett,” Congresswoman Lee said. “Peggy and I worked closely together over the years, and I always appreciated the dignified manner in which she approached her craft and her ability to capture the issues that were of great importance to the community that she covered.

“Peggy was a voice for the residents of the East Bay, a probing columnist who, over the years, developed a loyal following of readers that cross racial boundaries. Peggy worked hard to earn the trust of those she wrote about, and she spent a lifetime doing what every journalist longs to achieve – and that is to make a lasting impact on the community she was devoted to covering.

“Peggy will be deeply missed by all. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and her many colleagues in the journalism community.”
