WASHINTON, D.C. – The Democratic Caucus of the House Appropriations Committee met this week to select subcommittee assignments for the 112th Congress.

The powerful House Appropriations Committee assigned Congresswoman Lee (CA-9) to two subcommittees, including Labor Health and Human Services and Related Agencies (LHHS); and Financial Services.  The LHHS Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Department of Labor, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Department of Education and Related Agencies.

The subcommittee spending bill supports vital agency functions provided by the Department of Labor, including workforce readiness, Job Corps; and Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (OSHA). It also sets spending levels for the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS); and the following agencies: Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA); Centers for Disease Control; Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); Medicare and Medicaid Services; Administration for Children and Families (ACF); and the Administration on Aging.  Department of Education programs are also within the jurisdiction of the subcommittee and it outlines priorities and recommends spending levels that support Department of Education programs; including; the Fund for the Improvement of Education (FIE); Special Education Research; the Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE); Rehabilitation Services and Disability Research; and Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The Financial Services Subcommittee’s jurisdiction includes federal functions administered by the Dept. of Treasury; Small Business Administration (SBA); the Office of National Drug Control Policy; the Federal Communications Commission (FCC); the General Services Administration (GSA); the Office of Personnel Management (OPM); Office of the President; Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC);  and the United States Postal Service.  The Financial Services Subcommittee spending bill provides vital funding for workforce training facilities and technology centers; in addition to microenterprise and business incubator projects.

Congresswoman Lee’s service on the House Appropriations Committee, Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services and Related Agencies, and Financial Services, will enable her to aggressively and effectively advocate for, and ensure funding  to support vitally needed social “safety net” programs, educational initiatives, job safety provisions; and small business development efforts that her congressional district and our nation needs.
