Congresswoman Barbara Lee Releases Statement on Mistreatment of Haitian Migrants at Southern Border
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) released the following statement on the mistreatment of Haitian migrants at the southern border:
“The photos and footage of U.S. Border Patrol’s disgusting mistreatment of Haitians at the southern border are deplorable. This abuse not only contradicts American values, it bring us back to a time where this imagery was commonplace and Black people were treated as less than human. These people are at risk of being sent back to a country that is dealing with a natural disaster and political unrest—the same circumstances faced by many of the same people who experienced the 2010 earthquake. Instead of turning these families away, we should be finding ways to provide safe resettlement.
“There is no excuse for this horrendous behavior, and I join the chorus of calls from my colleagues to hold those responsible accountable to the fullest extent. I urge Secretary Mayorkas to take immediate action to fulfill the promises made by this administration from the beginning: that all migrants – no matter their country of origin or the circumstances surrounding their arrival – will be treated with fairness and decency.”
