Congresswoman Barbara Lee Releases Statement on Resignation of Special Envoy to Haiti Ambassador Daniel Foote
Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13), Chair of the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations Subcommittee, released the following statement on the resignation of Special Envoy to Haiti Ambassador Daniel Foote:
“I’m disappointed to see Special Envoy to Haiti Ambassador Daniel Foote resign from his position. Ambassador Foote understood the importance of Haitian-led solutions to the current crises and recognized the value in empowering Haitians to decide their future. His courage and conviction should be applauded, as I share the same concerns regarding the inhumane treatment of Haitians along the southern border and the counterproductive decisions to deport Haitians simply seeking refuge. There is no denying that these Haitian migrants’ homeland – which many of them no longer even recognize – has been ravaged by a natural disaster and civil unrest.
“I’m hopeful that the administration will appoint a successor that deeply understands the role of Haitian civil society and prioritizes the well-being of the Haitian people. It’s time we reimagine our approach to our foreign policy in the Caribbean, especially with Haiti. As a member of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus and Chair of the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations Subcommittee, I will continue working alongside my colleagues to develop policies and programs that provide support and opportunity to our Haitian neighbors.”
