Congresswoman Barbara Lee Releases Statement on the Oakland Athletics Final Home Game in Oakland
WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12) today released the following statement on the Oakland Athletics final home game at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s ownership plans to move the team to Las Vegas and intend to begin playing in Sacramento beginning next year.
“I am deeply saddened that today will be the final day that A’s fans in the East Bay will get to enjoy rooting for our team in Oakland. The history, pride, and success the A’s brought to our city will live on forever. While I’m disappointed that we have gotten to this point because of billionaire greed, despite our many efforts, I’m grateful for the memories the A’s have given generations of Oaklanders and me.
“From Vida Blue to Rickey Henderson to Dave Stewart, the A’s not only embodied athletic excellence, in the true spirit of Oakland, they embodied Black excellence in a predominantly White sport. The A's have been one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball and have brought immense pride to the city of Oakland. The Oakland A’s will always be us, and we are them.”
