Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) issued the following statement on today’s House of Representatives vote on a proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit desecration of the flag:
“I will not vote for any constitutional amendment that undermines the First Amendment, which, as the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed, protects even unpopular forms of dissent. Our founding fathers well knew the importance of free speech and expression, and carrying on that tradition, we should do everything possible to ensure that this fundamental cornerstone of our democracy remains intact.”
