Congresswoman Barbara Lee Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA)
OAKLAND, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee issued the following Statement today on U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program.
“The Supreme Court’s ruling is great news for the almost 700,000 DACA recipients, their families and the entire country.
These young people have lived in the United States for decades and have made a life for themselves and for their families. They are active members of our community, contribute to our economy and make America a stronger nation. The number of DACA recipients working on our front lines during our nation’s battle against the COVID-19 pandemic as doctors, nurses, teachers, and essential workers prove that every American benefits from this Supreme Court ruling.
I am so proud to represent so many Dreamers in my district. They are American in every way except on paper, and it is beyond cruel to deport them to countries many of them barely know.
Of course the Supreme Court was right that the President’s order to end the program was arbitrary, capricious, and illegal. However we also need to recognize the order was intentionally cruel, bigoted and immoral – just like the child internment camps on the Southern border. We have more work to do to protect these young Americans from the President’s racist anti-immigrant campaign. I hope the Senate will finally act on H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which will recognize the truth that Dreamers are part of our community, and we are better for it.”
