Congresswoman Lee to open Expo with remarks on job creation and unemployment
Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland), along with Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Wise Allen, Laney College President Dr. Elnora Webb and trustees of the Peralta Community College District, will hold a press conference prior to the opening of a Jobs and Career Expo that Congresswoman Lee is hosting on Friday, May 20, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Laney College Gymnasium, located at 900 Fallon Street in Oakland.
Congresswoman Lee’s Jobs and Career Expo – produced in collaboration with the Peralta Community College District, Laney College and partner organizations including the Oakland Private Industry Council (PIC) – will feature employers from a wide range of industries that are presently seeking to fill vacant positions. Participating employers from federal agencies, high-tech firms, green industries, transportation, banking, health care and construction trades will be on site to conduct interviews and provide career information for constituents seeking employment opportunities.
This event will also feature workshops throughout the day designed to enhance job-seeking strategies. Workshops will focus on green jobs opportunities, social media techniques, job-search strategies for those over 50 and the top emerging industries in the Bay Area. Volunteers from the Oakland Private Industry Council and East Bay Pen will provide resume reviews and critiques during the daylong event.
“In Congress, my colleague Congressman Bobby Scott and I have worked tirelessly to pass HR 589, which extends emergency benefits to long-term unemployed workers by providing 14 weeks of emergency unemployment benefits to job-seekers who have exhausted all their benefits yet are still unemployed,” said Congresswoman Lee. “With this event, I hope to provide another form of assistance by bringing my constituents together with companies and agencies that are actively hiring, while spreading awareness of services available to help those who are seeking employment.”
