Congresswoman Barbara Lee To Launch FREE Tax Assistance for Low-Income Families on Saturday: Millions of Dollars in Tax Refunds Waiting to be Claimed

Oakland, CA -- Congresswoman Barbara Lee will be participating in the Earned Income Tax Credit "Money Fair" on Saturday, February 8, which will take place from noon-4 p.m. at the Self-Sufficiency Center at Eastmont Mall, 6955 Foothill Boulevard, Suite 100 in Oakland. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with representatives of financial institutions and learn about how to save and manage money.

Free tax preparation services will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To qualify for free tax preparation, community residents must bring W-2 wage statements and have earned less than $35,000 in calendar year 2002. Persons not able to meet with a tax preparation specialist on Saturday can make an appointment to return at a later date, or they may call toll-free, 800-358-8832, to learn about other free tax preparation locations.

In between the individuals’ sessions will be financial literacy workshops at 1 and 3 p.m. A press conference will occur at 2 p.m.

"I am proud to be associated with the Earned Income Tax Credit partnership," said Congresswoman Lee. "Many hard-working families with low incomes are eligible to receive tax refunds of up to $4,100, yet because most eligible families are unaware of this tax benefit, literally millions of dollars are being unclaimed by people who need this money most. Benefits can even be claimed retroactively for up to three years, meaning that some people may be eligible to receive upwards of $12,000."

"In addition to helping people get money that rightfully belongs to them, I am proud to be associated with the EITC Partnership because we have established a distinguished and dedicated collaborative network to ensure that low-income community residents have access to free tax preparation services."

Attendees at the fair will also have the chance to win Albertsons supermarket gift certificates and gift baskets.

"The EITC benefit can make a difference in people's lives, by helping to pay bills, by helping to pay for today's needs, and by helping to build assets for future plans, said Congresswoman Lee. "In these troubled economic times, we need to ensure that those persons that need the most help in making ends meet receive all of the assistance to which they are entitled."
