Congresswoman Barbara Lee Will Speak at Atlanta’s Martin Luther King Celebration; Rally Marks Culmination of Four Days of Activities for Civil Rights Leader

Congresswoman Barbara Lee will be one of two keynote speakers Monday for the culminating event of Atlanta’s four-day Martin Luther King celebration. The celebration, sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference/Women’s Organizational Movement For Equality Now, Inc, coincides with the Martin Luther King national holiday.

Lee will speak at the King Center, after a mass march winds its way through the streets of Atlanta, where King grew up and later served as a pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

"Dr. King was a freedom fighter, a prophet, and a prince of peace," said Congresswoman Lee. "I am truly honored to be a part of the celebrations of his life and work here in his hometown of Atlanta."

This year’s theme for the four-day event will be "STOP THE VIOLENCE! Turn TO each other and not ON each other." Over the four days, beginning today, the conference will deal with issues ranging from the devastating plague of HIV/AIDS for African-American communities to discussions about stopping the violence among American youths.

Congresswoman Lee plans to speak to the hundreds expected for the march on Dr. King’s legacy as a peacemaker and his views against war.

"Given the way that our country’s leadership seems to be pushing us toward an unjust war, talking about Dr. King’s views on war is not only appropriate, but timely," said Lee.
