Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Lee (CA-09) released the following statement in response to reports that Department of Justice Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered the review of past interrogation practices of overseas detainees conducted under the auspices of the Bush Administration in order to identify any violation of federal law:

“Faith in government and democracy requires openness, transparency, and most importantly, accountability” said Congresswoman Lee. “I am pleased by Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to examine the legality of unwarrantable interrogation tactics that have stained the reputation of the United States abroad and undermined efforts to strengthen our national security.

“Recent allegations of unchecked abuse of power under the Bush Administration give cause for a full review of United States law enforcement, national security and intelligence activities in order to prevent future abuses of power.

“That is why I have introduced H.Res. 383, legislation that would establish a Select House Committee on National Security and Civil Liberties tasked with reviewing past and present United States policies and the extent to which unlawful, improper or unauthorized acts may have been committed by U.S. officials.”
