Congresswoman Lee Applauds the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Decision Rejecting Construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline
Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision not to grant an easement for construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline under Lake Oahe:
“The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ announcement that they will not grant an easement for the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline under Lake Oahe is a victory for tribal sovereignty, environmental justice, and the countless individuals who raised their voices in opposition to this destructive project.
“I applaud the courage of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, who peacefully defended their sacred lands under harsh conditions. I also want to thank the millions of Americans who stood in solidarity with the water protectors. This historic decision shows the power of every voice in our democracy.
“As we celebrate this victory, we must keep fighting for environmental justice, clean water, and respect for tribal lands across the nation. I will continue to work in Congress to protect our planet for future generations.”
