Congresswoman Lee Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12) released the following statement in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from September 15 to October 15 each year.
“Every year, we observe Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize and celebrate the rich contributions of the Latino community to this nation.
“Growing up in El Paso, Texas, I saw firsthand that the Latino community is incredibly vibrant and vital to our country. I have a deep respect for the Hispanic community and have the privilege of serving a vibrant Latino population in the 12th Congressional District of California.
“As we honor the Latino community, we must also acknowledge that they are disproportionately impacted by poverty, healthcare inequities, and other social injustices. We must recommit to fighting racism and bigotry, defending the rights of immigrants, and ensuring equity in all forms, from wages to housing to criminal justice.
“As a member of the Tri-Caucus, which comprises the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), I am a proud and vocal advocate for the Latino community and all communities of color. Our strength as a nation lies in our diversity. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!”
