Congresswoman Lee Celebrates Tentative Agreement In Laguna Hills Hotel Labor Dispute
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12) today celebrated a tentative agreement reached by UNITE HERE Local 11, a labor union representing hotel workers in Southern California, who have been striking on and off for nearly four months.
The contract will — once ratified — raise wages, strengthen pensions and increase investments in healthcare at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point, California. The hotel in Dana Point, which is owned by the University of California system through its retirement fund, in July became a center point of allegations of violence against striking workers.
In July, Congresswoman Lee sent a letter to the Chair of the University of California Board of Regents requesting information on the hotel management’s approach to complying with federal statutes and regulations regarding fair employment. Congresswoman Lee worked to ensure fair negotiations continued throughout and sent a letter to the National LaborRelations Board (NLRB) to highlight these allegations and request federal oversight.
“This agreement is a major win for hotel workers fighting for living wages, secure futures, and equitable health care,” said Congresswoman Lee. “I’m very pleased that UNITE HERE Local 11 was able to come to an agreement in this months-long battle for fair treatment. I want to congratulate all the negotiators from both sides on coming to an agreement, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside UNITE HERE Local 11 for fair labor standards for all Californians.”
“The Laguna Cliff Marriott is the fourth contract settled. We are excited that this contract meets the needs of the workers,” said Ada Briceno, Co-President of UNITE HERE Local 11. “Our workers fought hard for this victory! When we fight we win!”
