Congresswoman Lee Celebrates the Passage of Paycheck Fairness Act

Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Paycheck Fairness Act.

“This is a huge step forward for working women. More than five decades after the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, it is outrageous that the average woman still makes only 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man. The Paycheck Fairness Act is about a simple principle: women and men working the same job deserve the same pay. But this is more than just a women’s issue – it’s also a racial and economic justice issue. Women are the sole or co-breadwinner in half of American families with children – and African American and Latina women, who earn 63 and 54 cents respectively for every dollar a white man earns, are more likely to be breadwinners than their white counterparts. Paying women what they deserve is not just the right thing to do – it would also transform the economic circumstances of millions of families around the country. I’m proud to have voted for this legislation and will continue to fight for women and families.”
