Congresswoman Lee Named Co-Chair of the Congressional National Health Insurance Caucus

(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Lee (D-Oakland) was named co-chair of the Congressional National Health Insurance Caucus which will work to provide health coverage to all Americans.

“In a nation with 46 million uninsured individuals, I am honored to be part of a group that is committed to ensuring every single American has access to quality health care,” said Lee. “It is shameful that Congress has failed to pass legislation guaranteeing health coverage to all. I look forward to joining my colleagues in working to make national health insurance a priority of Congress and a reality for the American people.”

Congresswoman Lee will join Representatives John Conyers, Dennis Kucinich, and Jim McDermott in co-chairing the newly formed caucus. The caucus will serve as a forum to examine various proposals and legislation for national health insurance and will discuss techniques to establish national health insurance in this country.

Congresswoman Lee has long been a leading voice in the fight for universal healthcare. She has introduced H.R. 3000 which would establish a United States Health Service (USHS) to provide coverage to all Americans. The bill requires the USHS to ensure that every individual is given certain basic health rights, including the right to receive high quality care without discrimination.

The Congressional National Health Insurance Caucus will host its inaugural dinner on March 22, 2006 from 5:30 until 7:00 pm in 2237 Rayburn HOB. The featured speaker will be Marcia Angell, the former Editor-in-Chief of the New England Journal of Medicine and best-selling author of The Truth About Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It.
