Congresswoman Lee Remembers the Life and Legacy of State Senator Tom Hayden

Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released this statement upon the passing on former State Senator Tom Hayden:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my long-time friend, Tom Hayden. Throughout his life, Tom was a champion for peace, justice and human rights.

From founding Students for a Democratic Society to participating in the Freedom Rides, Tom ‎was tirelessly devoted to advancing equality and justice for all.

For eighteen years, Tom faithfully served the people of California in the legislature. I had the privilege to serve with him in the legislature and we became close colleagues and good friends. We worked together to address many issues facing our state.

Tom was an outspoken opponent of war – from Vietnam to Afghanistan and Iraq. His commitment to stopping endless wars and realizing peace was unparalleled. Many organizations have benefitted from his brilliance, passion and commitment to peace and justice.

We have lost a true warrior but his spirit and legacy of activism will live forever. I will miss him tremendously.

My thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s family at this difficult time."
